Dettah/Ndilo

These two communities,
located on opposite sides of Yellowknife Bay, are the headquarters
of the Yellowknives Dene. Both communities are accessible by road.
Only Ndilo, on the
northern half of Latham Island in Yellowknife, offers visitor services
– accommodation, and a small restaurant serving traditional
foods, with a great view. Several residents produce beautiful crafts
which are usually available at retail outlets in Yellowknife.The
community is also home to a diamond cutting and polishing facility
employing several local residents.
In winter, a wide ice
road on Yellowknife Bay shortens the driving distance to Dettah,
and in summer many families commute by boat.
Some residents follow a traditional Dene lifestyle, fishing and hunting nearby, while others work in Yellowknife and at the diamond mines to the north. Each community has a school, other services are provided from Yellowknife.
